Harris Tweed's creation begins with pure virgin wool cut from Cheviot sheep and Scottish Blackface sheep. While most of the wool is sourced from the British mainland, island communities still gather in early summer to gather and shear local sheep to add to the mix. These two types of wool are blended together to gain the advantages of their unique qualities and characteristics
Once sheared, the wool is scoured before being delivered in large bags to the main tweed producers' factories where it is then dyed in a wide range of colors for blending.
The recently dyed colored and white wool is weighed in predetermined proportions and then thoroughly mixed by hand with a special way to obtain the correct shade. It is then carded between mechanical serrated rollers that thoroughly tease and intermix the fibers before being separated into a frangible, embryonic yarn. This soft yarn is then given a twist as it is spun to give it maximum strength for weaving. The spun yarn is wound on bobbins to provide the weft (left-to-right threads) and warp (vertical threads) ingredients that are delivered to the weavers.
This all-important process sees thousands of warp threads gathered in long chops in a very specific order and wound onto large beams ready to be delivered, along with weft yarn, to the weavers.
All Harris Tweeds are hand woven on a pedal loom at home, each weaver has a 'double-width' Bonas-Griffith rapier loom at mill weaver, or normally an older 'single width' Hattersley loom at independent weavers. The weaver will 'connect' the warp threads of threading each end of thread through the eyes of their loom then heddles in a specific sequence to begin weaving, fixing any flaws or breaks that occur before being completed.
The tweed then returns to the mill in its 'greasy state', passing here through the hands of darners who correct any mistakes.
The latest process is the examination by the independent Harris Tweed Authority who visit the factories on a weekly basis, before applying their Orb Mark trademark which is stamped onto the fabric as a seal of authenticity.
